What specific steps did you note, and how would you rate the importance of these steps in the successful inclusion of a student with emotional and behavioral problems?

The first step is to meet with the team and discuss why they are entering the classroom, along with their behavior issues. The teacher starts by allowing the student to observe the classroom, once he/she is comfortable, the student will be placed into the classroom on the outer edges. The student will eventually become fully welcomed and introduced into the class. The goal of this is to transition the student into the classroom slowly and at a pace they are comfortable with. The teacher needs to gain students trust and make he/she feel welcomed, prior to the other students making the student feel welcome. If a student does not feel welcomed, or that they are as important as the other students, they will not feel wanted in the classroom. Some accommodations that may need to be made during the transition process could possibly be observing the students behavior prior to having them enter the class, so that the teacher can adjust and prevent negative situations from coming about. The teacher will also explain to the general education students of the incoming students behavior so they understand what to expect and why the student may be acting in a certain manner. The special education students have a sheet they take with them into the regular education rooms to remind them of the rules and what is expected of them. The special education also needs to prepare the students for what will be taught in the class and what to expect, so the student will feel prepared for the class period.
